Perry High School Students Recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation

Each year, around 1.5 million students take the PSAT test which enters them into the National Merit Scholarship Recognition and Competition. This year, Perry High School is pleased to announce that Ethan Hicks is a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist and Emily Culligan is being honored as a commended student.
Ethan is one of around 16,000 students to be notified that they have qualified as semi-finalists. “Ethan has taken nearly every AP exam we offer at Perry High School and every honors course,” said Perry High School Guidance Counselor, Lisa Gigante. “After exhausting our curriculum, Ethan has now moved on to taking College Credit Plus at Case Western Reserve University for part of his senior year”.
“I’ve always loved learning and pushing myself. Anyone who has spent time around me knows my curiosity pushes me to ask questions about everything, perhaps a few too many,” said Hicks. “I would like to thank Mr. Porcello, Mrs. Gigante, and the rest of Perry High School staff for helping make my unique academic schedule possible and answering all of my endless questions. Particularly, I would like to thank Mr. Stavar and Mr. Dixon as their help was instrumental in my preparation for the PSAT.”Emily Culligan & Ethan Hicks

As a commended student, Emily, who began taking College Credit Plus (CCP) courses when she was in middle school, scored in the top 3-4% of all PSAT participants from the 2020 – 2021 school year. “Emily is an incredibly hardworking young lady,” said Gigante. “She has progressed to taking full-time advanced-level CCP courses at Lakeland Community College.

National Merit Scholarship winners are selected based on a student’s academic record, their PSAT index score,
recommendation letters written by high school officials, information about their activity and leadership, and their own essay. More information about the National Merit Scholarship can be found at www.nationalmerit.org
